Questions and Answers

Why 3 chairs?

I used 3 chairs because I wanted the piece to be intellectual but not overwhelming. I feel that things that come by themselves feels quite random. Things in pairs is a fluke or occasional occurrence, but when things come in 3's, it is definitely intentional.

Why White, Black and Yellow?

These colors were chosen because they are basic and don't expose themselves to easily. They are subtle.

What style of chairs?

The chairs are school chairs. I found the simplest form of chair would be one found very commonly. School chairs are very common and come in bulk. These were the style of chairs used.

What dimensions are the chairs?

They are fairly small. 39.6 inches high and are intended for smaller people. Elementary school chairs are specifically designed for young students.

Are they are identical?

The chairs are identical except for the different colors. I felt a variation of chairs would be too intellectually confusing. They are the same height and size.

How do you document the event?

The event is documented fairly discretely. I have placed cameras in locations that are not easily visible. They are placed this way in order to truly capture the most authentic reactions from the audience.

Is the event an object just as much as the chairs are?

The event is important but I feel the physical reaction from the viewers is the part of this event that is as much an object as the chairs. This is what I am truly looking forward to watching.

Observation? Interaction or Both?

It is definitely both observation and interaction. It is the "aura" that people receive from a piece such as this -- from the simplicity of such an exhibition.

What influenced the placement of the chairs?

I chose these different locations because they were unexpected. I put a chair in the bathroom to show an odd sense of "out of place". The specific locations are to maximize the audiences reaction to such oddly placed chairs.

Did you build chairs by hand?

The chairs were not handmade. They were factory made for the schools

What material is each chair made of?

Each chair is made from wood. THe most simplistic and easily recognizable form.

Why in a gallery?

I wanted to show the idea of art but have the audience truly work see the intention of the piece. I chose a gallery so that the audience knew they were looking for art but nothing was found; nothing was found on the surface at least. If it was placed elsewhere I feel the art would be lost among the world's clutter.
