Between The Lines

This is both a physical and a mental exercise. Use only Method B if Method A does not produce an effective response (i.e. stopping).

If I ruled the world, everyone would get along and tolerate one another.
This is a rebellion. This is not an agreement.
If I ruled the world, coexistence would be the rule, not the opinion.
This is a person. This is not a dog.
If I ruled the world, I would demand that everyone recycles and work together to reserve all resources.
This is a tank. This is not a car.
If I ruled the world, everyone would be educated with the facts and not the views of a few.
This is a video. This is not a painting.
If I ruled the world, no one would go hungry.
This was twenty years ago. This is not today.

Walk onto the middle of the road. Aim for the front of the very first tank.
I feel pain in my chest, my legs, and my arms.
Stand tall and unwavering. (Best if you do not fear your own death.) (Since this is not a full sentence, I would end it with an ellipse...)
I feel pain in my heart, my soul, and my mind.
If the tank tries to move around you, adjust your position accordingly so that you will always be in front of the tank.
I feel pain in the road, the lampposts, and the vehicles.
Climb onto the tank.
I feel pain in my sorrow, my anger, and my fear.
Rap against the hull or make some effort to communicate with the soldiers inside.
I feel pain in the eyes of the soldier, the gun that he holds, and the stiffness in his shoulders.
Try to get in.
I feel pain in hate, love, and neutrality.
If you fail to gain entry into the tank, climb off and walk away. (There's nothing more you can do.)
I feel pain in what is not there, what is there, and the line in-between.

The problem is the risk of getting run over by the tank. Be aware of the potential to get crushed under the weight of the tank and possibly the tanks after it. (I would smooth out this last sentence. Maybe change this last sentence to: "Be aware: you could get crushed under the weight of the first tank or under the weight of any of the other tanks.")

  1. Hi Trang. I made some minor changes to your text above. I appreciate your use of typography. Also, you did an excellent job writing an Instruction Text. Maybe this is a technique you can use in describing other artworks... I think this sentence you wrote is especially beautiful: "I feel pain in the eyes of the soldier, the gun that he holds, and the stiffness in his shoulders." Please keep up the good work.
